Podcast as Pedagogy

A podcast is a digital audio or video file usually presented in a series format and available for streaming or download over the internet, covering a variety of topics such as news, entertainment, education, or storytelling. Podcasts attract attention by the pedagogical innovations they introduce to the processes of learning and teaching. Particularly with advantages such as enhancing student motivation, creating flexible learning environments, addressing different cognitive styles, improving listening skills, and contributing to students' in-depth understanding, podcasts provide students with an effective learning experience (Chen et al., 2019; Jones et al., 2021; Smith, 2020). Podcasts also encourage interaction among students, fostering the creation of a community, allowing them to share experiences, learn together, and grow collectively (Wang et al., 2023). Additionally, podcasts offer continuous professional development opportunities for educators, enabling them to stay updated on pedagogical trends and access best practices (Miller, 2022). Therefore, podcasts stand out as significant media in education, facilitating pedagogical transformations that enrich both learning and teaching processes.

The utilization of podcasts in learning and teaching processes is presented through various formats, each offering unique benefits (de Bie & Van Kooten, 2018). Audio lectures serve as a platform for educators to deliver narratives and explanations of concepts, providing opportunities to summarize weekly course content and highlight significant research. Case studies and expert interviews connect students to the external world, fostering exposure to multiple voices and perspectives. Reflection podcasts enable educators to give feedback on assignments and engage in a dialogue with students. Fieldtrip podcasts add an interactive layer by providing instructions for off-site experiences, enhancing student engagement with their surroundings. Student-generated podcasts, as assignments, allow students to deepen their understanding and develop collaborative, problem-solving, and creative skills. Some instructors at our university assign authentic tasks to students to create their own podcasts, expressing that such assignments increase the motivation of students and enable them to express themselves while having fun.

Developing podcasts that appeal to a broad audience and focus on educational trends under the guidance of learning and teaching centers at the universities requires a strategic plan and process. Podcasts should emphasize solutions tailored to the needs of students and faculty members and highlight an alignment with industry trends through the sharing of experiences. Ensuring diverse expertise among podcast guests is crucial, enriching the learning experience for both students and faculty members by presenting various perspectives. Content richness should encompass not only up-to-date information but also a focus on significant education-related subjects. The podcast's narrative style and language choice should be clear and effective to ensure a thorough understanding of the content. Interactive elements can be added to podcasts to enhance the participation of both students and faculty members; Q&A sessions and feedback gathered from the target audience can contribute to more effectively conveying the content.
