Interaction in Hyflex Classrooms

In the classrooms designed as Hybrid+Flexible, students attend the lesson online or face to face synchronously, according to their preferences.

In these classes, interaction with students who participate online can sometimes be weak, and after a while, the connection can be completely lost. In order to prevent this situation, it is necessary to have a well-balanced interaction with both learner groups.

How can we increase interaction?

Which materials and learning experiences would be needed in order to have the same learning outcome?

- The activities, which would be done in the lesson, must be carefully planned for both online and face to face participants before the lesson.

- A community contract must be created to identify the expectations of the online and face to face participants.

Don't lose the connection

  • Repeat the questions of face-to-face participants to the online participants.

  • Ask questions to online participants and give them time to participate.

  • While addressing those who participate online look at the camera and stand close to the microphone.

Use Digital Tools

  • Control the chat screen not to miss out the questions coming from online participants.

  • Collect feedback and reactions from the participants by conducting mini surveys during the lessons.

  • Get help from digital tools to improve class interaction and cooperation.

Create a sense of community

Ensure that students who attend the lesson online and face to face are connected with each other.

  • Discussion forms
  • Heterogeneous working groups (F2F & Online)
  • Cooperative activities
  • Peer teaching
  • Icebreaker Activities, and so on.

Formative assessment techniques

Use formative assessment techniques in the lessons.

  • One-minute papers
  • Student generated test questions
  • One-sentence summary
