How can I use Respondus Monitor and Pearson Lockdown Browser together in the exam?

 

With this exam method, you can configure a Quiz that you have prepared in the Pearson system with the Pearson Lockdown Browser and Respondus Monitor. Thus, students will be able to access the exam through the Pearson system, their screens will be locked with the Pearson Lockdown Browser, and their audio and images will be recorded with the Respondus Monitor throughout the exam.

  1. Access your Pearson-integrated course via LMS.

  2. Click on the "MyLab Course Settings" field on the LMS page.

  3. A new page will open with information about your course. Click on the "Edit" option next to Learning Aids and Test Options title on this page.

  4. On the new page that opens, there are two options "Use the Pearson Lockdown Browser in this course" and "Use automated proctoring in this course" in the Lockdown Browser and Proctoring area.

    1. Select the “Use the Pearson Lockdown Browser in this course” option to enable the Pearson Lockdown Browser.
    2. Select the “Use automated proctoring in this courseoption to enable the Respondus Monitor. When you select this option, the following fields will be opened sequentially.
      1. Select the Select proctoring partner field as "Respondus Monitor Proctoring".
      2. Click on the “Change the Respondus Monitor Proctoring license type” field. On the page that opens, you need to write a code in the enter code field.
        1. Go back to the LMS page of the course to find the relevant code
        2. Click on the "Respondus Lockdown Browser" option from the "Add a Block" field on the course page in LMS.
        3. Click on the “Dashboard” option from Respondus block.
        4. Click on the “Other Systems” field.
        5. Click on the “Pearson MyLab“ option.
        6. Copy the code written here.
        7. Go back to your Pearson page and paste this code into the enter code field.
        8. Click on the “Make Available” button.

  5. Click on the “Save” button. It will be sufficient to do this procedure one time for each course.
  1. Go back to your course’s LMS page and click on the "MyLab Assignment Manager".

  2. Create a Quiz (you may have created the Quiz before).

  3. Click on the "Select" field on the far right of the row with the quiz. Then click on the "Edit" from the drop down menu.

  4. Click on the “Choose Settings” field.

  5. Mark the Lockdown Browser and Proctoring field under the Access Controls heading as "Require a Lockdown Browser with Respondus Monitor Proctoring".

  6. Click on the “Save and Assign” button.

  7. Click on the "More Tools" field in the top menu to adjust the settings of Respondus Monitor. Then, click on the "Respondus Monitor Proctoring Dashboard" option from the drop down menu.

  8. Click on the “Advanced Settings” field.

    1. Under the "Startup Sequence" heading, the stages the student will encounter step by step in the exam are indicated.
      1. Webcam CheckIt checks if the student's webcam is connected. This feature is enabled by default and cannot be turned off. 
      2. Additional InstructionsIt refers to the instruction to be shown to the student at the beginning of the exam.
        1. The related instruction: “During this exam, you shouldn't access other resources (a phone, tablet, notes, books, etc.) or communicate with other people. Please stay in your seat and focus on the computer screen until the exam is complete. If an interruption occurs, briefly explain what happened by speaking directly to your webcam. And, finally, remember that you cannot exit the exam until all questions are completed and the test has been submitted for grading.
        2. If you want, you can change the instruction by clicking on the "Edit Text" field.
      3. Guidelines + Tips: It is presented to students with suggestions and tips regarding the exam process.
      4. Student PhotoIt asks the student to take a photo.
      5. Show ID: It refers to the instruction given to the student to show the OzU card with photo to the camera. 
        1. The related instruction: “Hold your identification to the camera and select "Take Picture." (Only use the type of identification indicated by your instructor).”. 
        2. If you want, you can change the instruction by clicking on the "Edit Text" field.
      6. Environment CheckIt refers to the instruction given to the student to take a video of the environment where the device to take the exam is located. 
        1. The related instruction: “Make sure the area around your computer is clear of papers, books, phones, etc. Click "Start Recording" and slowly tilt/pan your webcam so a brief video can be made of the area around your computer. (If the webcam is built into the monitor, just do your best to show the surrounding area.) Click "Stop Recording" when finished.”
        2. If you want, you can change the instruction by clicking the "Edit Text" field.
    2. Under the heading “Facial detection options” there are the following two options.
      1. Prevent students from starting the exam if face cannot be detected during Startup Sequence: If the student's face is not detected, they are not allowed to start the exam.  
      2. Notify students during the exam if face cannot be detected (prompt for a fix): If the student's face is not detected, it informs the student during the exam.

  9. Click on the “Save + Close” button.
  1. When the exam is completed by your students, click on the "MyLab Assignment Manager" field on the LMS page to access the students’ recordings.

  2. Click on the "More Tools" area in the top menu of the page that appears.

  3. Then, click on the "Respondus Monitor Proctoring Dashboard" option from the drop down menu.

  4. Click on the "Video Review" option on this page.

 

The considerations about the Respondus Monitor software are listed below.

  1. Respondus Monitor provides automatic observation results to the instructor and only the instructor can access these results.

  2. Respondus Monitor cannot access the student's Webcam outside of the exam environment.
  3. As soon as the student submits the exam, Respondus Monitor stops the camera recording and the student is actively disconnected from the Respondus application.

  4. Respondus Monitor does not require students to register or log in to the system.

  5. Personal information of the student (such as student ID card) is securely transmitted to the Respondus Monitor server and stored on the server in encrypted form. Respondus does not process or analyze this data.

  6. Respondus Monitor has undergone detailed security / privacy reviews by the world's largest distance education platforms.

  7. The instructor can deactivate the “Environment Check” option from the Respondus Monitor features to alleviate students' concerns about recording their personal living space. It is at the initiative of the instructor.

  8. The instruction to be given to the students about the camera angles is at the initiative of the instructor.

  9. Students may be advised to uninstall the Pearson Lockdown Browser software from their computers after the exam is complete.
